A quick project completed in 18 hours over the course of 4 nights. Animated it on my laptop, lit and textured on my home desktop using VRay RT, and carried through to completion at work on my desktop & a 40 quad bladed render farm.
In this quick three day turnaround, the initial scene was created by the lead 3D artist at Digital Kitchen and handed off to me for a series of revisions. I molded the way the reflections and lighting dance across the tablet, tweaking them into place per direction of the client and creative leads.
This product spin was used as the end-tag in a 2 minutes Blackberry PlayBook release video created by other artists at Digital Kitchen. The video went viral and landed 1.7 million YouTube hits in the first seven days, making it the #1 video of the week.
If you go to Las Vegas any time soon (or ever), you surely won’t miss the largest and highest resolution marquee on the strip. It’s displayed out front of The Cosmopolitan hotel, and us at Digital Kitchen are in charge of animating the content on it.
It’s primarily a montage of room photography and brand logos, but myself and other 3D artists here created the transitions and interludes. I was responsible for the water animation (seen in the photo above and the video here), as well as the fabric animation also seen in the video (comes in at 1:55, and make sure to view it in HQ).
Besides the mentioned video of the full content (continuously updated), here are some photographs of the sign in action.
P.S. Myself nor Digital Kitchen take any responsibility for the logo design.
So Toy Story 3 is coming out this Friday, and in theory, the Cartoon Network animation I worked on at Digital Kitchen should be playing before the movie. The animation is an introduction sequence to Cartoon Network’s Screen Vision advertisement, which plays while people are filtering into the theater before the previews start. We are told it is being displayed in AMC theaters for G and PG rated movies, so make sure to get there early to hopefully catch it!
Personally, I was in charge of all the flashy, spinning 3D cubes you see in the background of some shots. I had to animate them moving in an interesting way and time their motion up with the beat of the audio. I also pitched in and helped with the floating 3D black and white tiles, and the compositing of our 3D animation into the video footage.
I finally just finished putting together a new reel. It’s been about a year in the making, including all commercial work I’ve had the opportunity to help out with. It’s all 720p so be sure to click the HD button to watch it in high definition on vimeo. Check out toddfx.com to see the full length videos featured here. And be expecting a lot of updates and additions from here on out.
I’m not going to be putting this on my portfolio site, as I only had an extremely minor role, but I did a couple days of work on this Career Builders commercial about 2 months ago.
Filmworkers sent me some 3D scenes in which I had to manipulate a character rig to match the motion of these actors. From there they used the geometry to interact with the fairy particles, allowing realistic bounce and falloff around their shoulders and arms. Specifically, I worked on the alignment of rigs for the construction worker and bomb squad.
A new Illinois Lottery commercial I worked on is released. I worked with The Filmworkers Club to create a wall of money raining down on this car. Specifically, I created the dynamic dollar bills in the two skidding shots among various others. Check it out.
A few Target spots I worked on at Digital Kitchen were released today. Look for them on TV, but you can also check them out at target.com/daredreamdo, as well as d-kitchen.com and toddfx.com.
They’re geared for black history month, and feature stop-motion style animations interacting with individuals speaking about their careers. My job involved creating various 3D elements to hover around and fill space. Specifically, I animated the kitchen doors, flying food platter, various pots and cooking utensils, and a few vegetables. I also did a good deal of rotoscoping and rig removal in all four spots.
GenArts and Wondertouch just released a new particle generator for After Effects called Particle Illusion (piAE). During my involvement in the beta test, I created this video cue to the Chemical Brothers song “Burst Generator.”
